Why I’m not setting 2025 new year’s resolutions.

I’m a mental health therapist and I don’t set New Year’s resolutions.

Here’s why I think New Year’s resolutions often set us up for failure:

Most New Year’s resolutions are too lofty - Most people set goals that are unattainable for where they’re currently at. For example, if someone isn’t exercising at all, setting a New Year’s resolution to work out 5 days a week is way out of touch with their starting point and will likely fall apart quite quickly.

Many New Year’s resolutions are not specific enough - If you set a goal without specificity (ex: “I’m going to start going to bed earlier” vs specifically “I’m going to start getting ready for bed at 9:30 and going to bed at 10”), it’s going to feel like wandering around with a blindfold, not knowing what the target is or how to hit it.

And maybe most importantly, I believe humans are capable of change any time - New Year’s resolutions often set up January as THE month for change, but this can lead us to black and white thinking. If/when we don’t actually make the change, it sets us up to feel like we don’t get another shot until next January. Truth is - you can start any time you want.

If you live in Utah and you’re looking to make SUSTAINABLE changes for yourself, you’re in the right place.

My name is Erin and I’m a mental health and EMDR therapist in Salt Lake City.

I work with women who have experienced trauma or who are stuck in patterns that are no longer working but seem impossible to break (like people-pleasing, perfectionism, or self-criticism).

I’m accepting new clients in Utah and I have a spot on my schedule with your name on it.

I can’t wait to meet you!
